CHARLESTON, SC – The Art of Jazz Series opens with the Richard White Trio on June 19, 2019 from 6pm – 7pm at the Gibbes Museum of Art located on 135 Meeting Street. The Richard White Trio will create new compositions as inspired by Black Refractions: Highlights from The Studio Museum in Harlemexhibit currently being displayed at the Gibbes Museum. The exhibition addresses themes directly relevant to our region, including race, identity, power, wealth, and memory, and will expand understanding of modern and contemporary art by artists of African descent. Tickets are on sale now: $25 general admission | $20 for Gibbes Museum of Art Members | $10 for students. The ticket price includes the jazz concert and museum admission. JUNE 19, 2019: 2019 Art of Jazz Series: Richard White Trio

Richard White is one of the most dynamic pianists and composers in the Charleston area. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, he studied classical piano from age 7-17 and was introduced to jazz by his father before high school. Richard has performed in Victoria, British Columbia and recently completed a successful international jazz tour. He has opened for many famous artists such as Branford Marsalis, Will Downing, Brian McKnight and Alex Bugnon. He has played locally with the Charleston Jazz Orchestra, the Charlton Singleton Quintet, and the Charleston Symphony that featured vocalist Ellis Hall.

Charleston Jazz and the Gibbes Museum of Artpresent the third-annual Art of Jazz Series, sponsored by the Kite Foundation Fund, Art Bridges and the Gibbes’ Women’s Council. For the second year in a row, 5Church is excited to be on board as the hospitality partner, creating complimentary specialty cocktails designed specifically for the 2019 Art of Jazz performances at the Gibbes Museum.
