The Charleston Jazz Orchestra, led by Maestro Robert Lewis, is comprised of an accomplished group of jazz musicians and is an entertaining and educational example of the rich history and legacy of jazz in Charleston. The CJO has become known for unique, enthusiastically received concerts that contribute mightily to the ever-evolving Lowcountry arts scene.

Each season, the Charleston Jazz Orchestra presents 6 concerts at the Charleston Music Hall.  These performances highlight a specific theme, or feature an international guest artist.  The best way to experience the CJO is to become a Season Subscriber (6 concerts) or become a Flex Pass holder (2-5 concerts).

The Charleston Jazz Festival is held every year during the month of April.  The event draws music-lovers from around the globe to Charleston, SC for a four-day celebration of the Holy City’s jazz heritage.  Musical performances feature renowned international headliners and performances at multiple venues.

With a variety of music lessons and classes, the Charleston Jazz Academy brings together students of all backgrounds and ages in a collaborative, fun and challenging environment to expand their repertoire and nurture the skills of music and improvisation while emphasizing the importance of team work, creativity and self-expression.

Private and group music lessons and classes are available in most instruments, as well as jazz band, camps, and workshops. We believe in providing all students with an equal opportunity to participate in music education. If you would like to apply for a scholarship, please let us know in the enrollment form. Scholarships are awarded based on financial need and/or musical merit.

The Art of Jazz Series is one of Charleston Jazz’s most popular annual programs presented in partnership with the Gibbes Museum of Art.  Celebrated local musicians compose original works inspired by the art on display at the museum.

Momentum, presented by Charleston Jazz, is an exciting, electric band with some of the finest musicians in the Lowcountry. Led by Demetrius Doctor, they create an eclectic mix of Classic and Contemporary Fusion, R&B, Soul Jazz, and Gospel. Musical selections are inspired by the sounds of Stevie Wonder, Jon Batiste, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Jill Scott, Snarky Puppy and more.

Jazz Day for Kids is an annual program presented by Charleston Jazz, in partnership with the Gaillard Center’s Education and Community Program. This interactive concert features the Charleston Jazz Express, led by Maestro Robert Lewis, and GRAMMY-winner Charlton Singleton, Gaillard Center Artist-in-Residence Emeritus. Designed for kindergarten through middle school students, this highly engaging performance will have students riveted to the stage as they sing and clap along, while learning about jazz history and exploring the rhythms and sounds of various instruments.  They will experience the magic of  how the musicians come together through teamwork to form the big band sound.
