Our in-school programs bring the rich sounds and history of jazz directly to students, inspiring creativity and opening doors to new cultural experiences. Through live performances and interactive masterclasses, students discover how jazz—born from African American traditions, folk and blues influences, and European harmonies—became one of America’s greatest art forms.
By exploring this music and its deep connection to Charleston, young people gain a greater appreciation for cultural diversity, artistic expression, and collaboration. Jazz’s improvisational nature encourages students to think imaginatively, take creative risks, and build confidence in their own voices.
Beyond its history, jazz continues to shape the music students hear today. Its rhythms and harmonies live on in hip-hop, rock, country, and more—helping students connect the past to the music of their own generation.
