We believe every child deserves access to the transformative power of jazz. Charleston Jazz offers multiple pathways for students to experience and engage with this uniquely American art form—from attending Jazz Day for Kids field trips and Charleston Jazz Orchestra performances through our Jazz Pass program, to participating in in-school performances, masterclasses, and instructional classes.
Our programs bring live music and professional artists directly to students, introducing them to jazz’s rich history, cultural significance, and spirit of creativity and innovation. Through interactive experiences with accomplished musicians, students build confidence, self-expression, collaboration, and critical thinking skills while discovering the joy of live music.
Our goal is to inspire curiosity, nurture creativity, and create meaningful connections to jazz that can spark a lifelong appreciation for music and learning.

In-School Performances
We provide jazz programs tailored for elementary, middle, and high school students in the Charleston Tri-County area. Whether it’s a performance, workshop, or artist visit to a school, these events help students develop an interest in and appreciation for jazz music and Charleston’s unique role in jazz history.

Jazz Pass
Jazz Pass provides free tickets for K–12 students and their families to attend Charleston Jazz Orchestra performances. By removing financial barriers, the program gives young people the opportunity to experience world-class live jazz, often for the first time, while creating meaningful shared experiences with their families. Jazz Pass helps inspire the next generation of musicians, arts supporters, and lifelong music lovers.

Jazz Combo at School

Jazz Day for Kids
Designed for kindergarten through middle school students, this highly engaging performance will have students riveted to the stage as they sing and clap along, while learning about jazz history and exploring the rhythms and sounds of various instruments.

Melodica Project
Now in our fourth year, we are partnering with Angel Oak Elementary School on Johns Island, teaching their 4th and 5th-grade students to play the melodica instrument. The Melodica Project introduces students to the jazz style of music through melodicas, hand-held instruments that utilize the same layout as a piano but require individuals to use a wind tube to create sound.
