Our combo classes are at the heart of what makes jazz education so powerful. In these small ensembles, students learn to listen, adapt, and create together—skills that go far beyond music. Combos encourage improvisation, collaboration, and leadership, giving each student a chance to find their own voice while supporting the group as a whole.
Beyond mastering rhythms and harmonies, students develop confidence, problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate and think creatively in real time. These are the same skills that translate into success in school, work, and life. Jazz combos teach resilience, flexibility, and teamwork—values that echo the spirit of jazz itself.
Combo Classes
The Charleston Jazz Academy’s Combo Class is an enriching program for musicians in grade 7 and above, focusing on jazz improvisation and ensemble performance. Offered in three skill levels—Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced—the class ensures musicians are placed in the right environment to thrive. Beginners learn foundational techniques, intermediates refine their skills with more complex material, and advanced students tackle challenging repertoire and develop professional-level performance abilities. Classes take place weekly, fostering creativity and collaboration among participants.
Homeschool Band
The Charleston Jazz Academy’s Homeschool Band offers students in grades 4 through 12 the chance to delve into instrumental music, focusing on instruments like flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and various percussion instruments. The program is divided into two levels: beginners, who are introduced to instrument selection, music notation, rhythm, pitch, posture, and breathing techniques; and intermediates, who build upon prior knowledge and expand their performance repertoire.
Summer Jazz Combo Camp
Charleston Jazz Academy’s Jazz Combo Camp is our signature summer program. The camp is designed to provide a fun and educational experience for young musicians who are interested in exploring the world of jazz music. The program offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers topics such as improvisation, rhythm, music theory, and ensemble playing. Students will have the opportunity to work with experienced jazz musicians and educators who will help them develop their skills and build their confidence as performers. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced musician, the Jazz Combo Camp is a great way to improve your playing and make new friends who share your passion for jazz music.
