The sound of the Lowcountry begins and ends with rhythm.
Who: Open to all experience levels! Gullah Rhythms Class is offered in two sections:
Youth: 7th–12th Grade
Adults: Ages 18+
No prior musical experience or instruments are required. Whether you’re picking up percussion for the first time or expanding your musical skills, you’ll find a welcoming, collaborative environment.
What: Explore the heartbeat of the Lowcountry through rhythm. Gullah Rhythms is a hands-on percussion class celebrating the rich musical traditions of the Gullah Geechee people. Students will learn foundational percussion techniques while playing traditional instruments such as tambourine, washboard, and other African and Gullah percussion instruments.
Inspired by historic Gullah/Geechee gatherings, participants will build ensemble skills, connect with Charleston’s cultural heritage, and discover how these rhythms have influenced music throughout the United States and around the world.
When: Class begins Thursday September 10. Adult Class is 5-6pm and 7-12 Grade Class is 6:30 – 7:30pm. This 90-minute class meets once a week for 14 weeks.
