Now in our third year, we are partnering with Angel Oak Elementary School on Johns Island, teaching their 4th and 5th-grade students to play the melodica instrument. The Melodica Project introduces students to the jazz style of music through melodicas, hand-held instruments that utilize the same layout as a piano but require individuals to use a wind tube to create sound. This instrument was chosen because it requires the student musician to demonstrate proper breathing technique (similar to a traditional brass or woodwind instrument) and knowledge of the piano (applicable to all instruments, including percussion).
