FAMILY JAZZ DAY / COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON SOTTILE THEATRE /
SUNDAY, JANUARY 21, 3:00PM – 5:30PM

CHARLESTON, SC – January 12, 2018 – A highlight of the 4th Annual Charleston Jazz Festival is the Family Jazz Day featuring many of Charleston’s up and coming youth artists and teachers. The annual festival brings together hundreds of jazz lovers from across South Carolina for four days of jazz performances by award-winning artists. The festival will take place January 18 – 21, 2018, with events at multiple locations throughout downtown Charleston, including the Charleston Music Hall, Gaillard Center, College of Charleston Sottile Theatre, Renaissance Hotel Ballroom, Prohibition, and Barsa Tapas Lounge and Bar.

The final day of the festival is devoted to community and youth music programs with performances by the School of The Arts Jazz Band, the Charleston All Star Youth Jazz Orchestra, and the Ken Foberg Quartet featuring Alva Anderson at the College of Charleston Sottile Theatre from 3:00pm – 5:30pm.

Charleston All-Star Youth Jazz Orchestra
This exciting band is comprised of Charleston’s top youth jazz musicians hand-picked by area high school band directors. A new group is curated each year to perform at the Charleston Jazz Festival. The All-Star Orchestra is led by Charleston Jazz Orchestra trumpeter and long-time music educator Stephan Berry and assisted by David Carter, Director of Education and Outreach at Charleston Jazz.

Charleston School of the Arts Jazz Band
Known as ‘SOA JAZZ,’ this elite high school band led by Band Director Basil Kerr, has performed at several prestigious events including the East Carolina University Jazz Festival, the Savannah Music Festival, the Spoleto Festival, and the South Carolina Music Educators Convention.

Ken Foberg Jazz Quartet with Alva Anderson
The Ken Foberg Jazz Quartet features the smooth trombone sound of Ken Foberg. Ken has worked with many notable ensembles, to include the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Joining his Quartet for this special show is the internationally known jazz singer and violist Alva Anderson. Together, they create a toe-tapping and exciting show for audiences as they perform jazz, ballads, and Latin jazz favorites.

“The 4th Annual Charleston Jazz Festival provides a stage for the many talented youth musicians who are being developed in our high schools right now,” said Stephan Berry, director of the Charleston All-Star Youth Orchestra. “The students need to learn quickly, practice hard, and bring out their best in front of a large jazz festival audience. It’s a great experience for everyone.”

All three concerts are part of the final day of the festival on January 21 at the College of Charleston Sottile Theatre beginning at 3:00pm. Admission is FREE for children and students ages 18 and under, adults are $5.
