 In 2019 Charleston Jazz Series at Piccolo Spoleto

MAY 27-28, 2019 | 7:30PM + 9:00PM | DOCKERY’S

CHARLESTON, SC –Charleston Jazz will present four diverse jazz ensembles as part of Piccolo Spoleto Festival on May 27 and May 28, 2019 at Dockery’s on Daniel Island. Performance times are 7:30pm and 9:00pm each day.

“We are excited to present some of Charleston’s best jazz ensembles during the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. Our community is filled with incredible jazz performers and we look forward to sharing their talents with the festival audience,” says Tatjana Beylotte, Acting Director of Charleston Jazz.

May 27, 2019, 7:30pm: CHANTALE GAGNÉ QUARTET: Salute to Horace Silver

A native of Quebec, Canada, jazz pianist/composer Chantale Gagné began studying music at the age of 8. In 2005, she studied with jazz piano legend Kenny Barron and realized jazz had become her deepest calling. On May 27, the Chantale Gagné Quartet will play the music of Horace Silver, one of the most popular jazz pianists of all time. Horace was a popular member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and steeped in the Hard-Bop jazz tradition.

May 27, 2019, 9:00pm: GINO CASTILLO & THE CUBAN COWBOYS

Join us for the ultimate Latin Jazz party as Gino Castillo & The Cuban Cowboys bring their Latin jazz flare to Dockery’s! From Quito, Ecuador, Gino Castillo has made a name for himself as the leader of Afro-Cuban Jazz and Salsa in Charleston. He has performed and recorded with many national artists, such as Earl Klugh, Heracio el Negro Hernandez, and Jessy J. Gino Castillo & The Cuban Cowboys are known for their high-energy performances and sure to get you on your feet!

May 28, 2019, 7:30pm: BLUES, BALLADS & SWING: The Music of Saxophonist Mark Sterbank

Saxophonist and composer Mark Sterbank is Associate Professor of Jazz Studies and Saxophone at Charleston Southern University. His 2014 CD of original compositions, entitled Dayspring, was featured on Sirius XM Radio’s Real Jazz.

Mark’s credits include performances with the Harry Connick, Jr. Orchestra, the Darius Rucker Big Band, and Eartha Kitt, and regularly performs with the Quentin Baxter Quintet, the Charlton Singleton Quintet, and is tenor saxophonist and arranger for the Charleston Jazz Orchestra. On this special evening, the Mark Sterbank Quartet will perform an exciting program of Mark’s original music.

May 28, 2019, 9:00pm: HEATHER RICE & FRIENDS: In the Air Tonight

A dynamic jazz singer and songwriter, Heather Rice delivers color and beauty with her passionate and versatile voice. Heather hails from Ormond Beach, Florida, and now calls Charleston her home and has found her unique niche as she performs regularly throughout the Lowcountry. On this very special evening, Heather and her friends will perform creatively reworked favorites by Genesis singer and solo artist Phil Collins, who wrote and recorded many hits, including ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’, ‘In the Air Tonight’, ‘Sussudio’ and ‘One More Night’.
