Coming in the Fall 2025!

The Improvisation classes at the Charleston Jazz Academy aim to equip players with beginner to advanced level tools for navigating jazz improvisation. Dealing with scales, chord progressions, chromaticism, enclosures, and many other areas, we look to develop each student’s musical language. Music is as much a language as it is notes, rhythm, and harmony. Taught by Gavin Smith and Mark Sterbank, respectively, our Beginner Improvisation and Intermediate/Advanced Improvisation classes will teach students how to improvise musically the way they improvise verbally. With the tools and poise we look to instill, we anticipate more confident and complete improvisers all around the Charleston area. Bring your instruments!
