The Southern Pines bring jazzy sounds inspired by art and South Carolina life

Showcasing original music by Dr. Colleen Clark and featuring Grammy Award-winning vocalist Quiana Parler

The Southern Pines features two-time Grammy Award-winning vocalist Quiana Parler from Ranky Tanky and some of the Southeast’s finest jazz musicians! This female-driven band was formed with inspiration from South Carolina life and the exhibit Our Own Work, Our Own Way: Ascendant Women Artists from the Johnson Collection at the Columbia Museum of Art. All of their music is written by bandleader Colleen Clark, who has a deep understanding of swing, New Orleans street beats, and blues. Colleen is an assistant professor of jazz at the University of South Carolina, where she coordinates small ensembles, conducts a big band, and teaches drum set studio and jazz history courses. She is the first and only drummer to earn a Doctor of Musical Arts from the world-renowned University of North Texas.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Celebrated as one of the best things to do in Charleston, SC, the Charleston Jazz Festival is an unforgettable experience.  If you are new to the jazz genre, take a risk and surprise yourself.  Jazz is an integral part of Charleston’s history and culture.  Lowcountry Gullah and Geechie praise house rhythms have been passed down through the generations, leaving a distinctive and indelible mark on the jazz art form.  As one of the early cradles of jazz, Charleston is proud to host this annual festival in one of the most significant jazz destinations in the world.

When you walk through the doors of the Music Farm, you are stepping back in time to a circa 1849 passenger train station. This hip, intimate venue offers a bar with a wide variety of beverage options. The Music Farm is also home to Tully’s, a tiny kitchen serving burgers, veggie burgers, fries, and more.

Our audience is diverse and you will see patrons of all ages and walks of life, including couples, singles, students, families, and groups of friends – jazz has never met a stranger and all are welcome.  Many of our guests are tourists visiting Charleston, and some of our regular attendees have been coming to concerts since the beginning of the organization.  We hope that you will become one of our “regulars” as well by joining the Charleston Jazz family by becoming a Season Subscriber, Member, Sponsor, Donor, Student or AdvertiserThere is a place for YOU at Charleston Jazz.

The caliber of performances are spectacular. Their musical selections appeal to all musical tastes regardless of age.
