Britain’s lyrical jazz clarinetist brings a Benny Goodman vibe to the Charleston Jazz Festival’s Lowcountry Jazz Day
To kick off the 2024 Charleston Jazz Festival, jazz clarinetist Pete Neighbour presents his unique Swing-Era Jazz for the 21st Century! Originally from London, England, Pete now calls Charleston home and has traveled extensively, performing at New York’s Lincoln Center, the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Cannes Film Festival, and various venues in New Orleans, Paris, Singapore, and Sidney. Pete’s early playing years were heavily influenced by the ‘Swing Era’ of the 1930s and 40s, especially that of Benny Goodman, whom he still holds in great esteem. Today, Pete’s style still encompasses that of Benny and his contemporaries but is much enhanced by other clarinet greats such as Buddy de Franco, Tony Scott, and Eddie Daniels.

Lowcountry Gullah and Geechie praise house rhythms have been passed down through the generations, leaving a distinctive and indelible mark on the jazz art form. As one of the early cradles of jazz, Charleston is proud to host this annual festival in one of the most significant jazz destinations in the world.
When you walk through the doors of the Music Farm, you are stepping back in time to a circa 1849 passenger train station. This hip, intimate venue offers a bar with a wide variety of beverage options. The Music Farm is also home to Tully’s, a tiny kitchen serving burgers, veggie burgers, fries, and more.
Our audience is diverse and you will see patrons of all ages and walks of life, including couples, singles, students, families, and groups of friends – jazz has never met a stranger and all are welcome. Many of our guests are tourists visiting Charleston, and some of our regular attendees have been coming to concerts since the beginning of the organization.
