Arturo O’Farrill Latin Jazz Quintet

Arturo O’Farrill is a 6X GRAMMY Award-winning Latin jazz pianist, composer, and educator that was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. His professional career began with the Carla Bley Band, and he continued as a solo performer with a wide spectrum of artists, including Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, and Harry Belafonte.

In December 2010, Arturo traveled with the original Chico O’Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra to Cuba, returning his father’s musicians to his homeland. He continues to travel to Cuba regularly as an informal cultural ambassador, working with Cuban musicians, dancers, and students, bringing local musicians from Cuba to the US and American musicians to Cuba.

Arturo has received commissions from Meet the Composer, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Philadelphia Music Project, The Apollo Theater, Symphony Space, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Young People’s Chorus of New York, Columbia University, and the New York State Council on the Arts.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Celebrated as one of the best things to do in Charleston, SC, the Charleston Jazz Festival is an unforgettable experience.  If you are new to the jazz genre, take a risk and surprise yourself.  Jazz is an integral part of Charleston’s history and culture.  Lowcountry Gullah and Geechie praise house rhythms have been passed down through the generations, leaving a distinctive and indelible mark on the jazz art form.  As one of the early cradles of jazz, Charleston is proud to host this annual festival in one of the most significant jazz destinations in the world.

When you step through the doors of the Charleston Music Hall you are stepping back in time into a circa 1849 train station, historically known as the Tower Depot.  You will hear the iconic sounds of jazz wafting through the lobby, reminiscent of the city’s rich jazz history.  Stop by one of the lobby bars on the lower or upper lever to purchase snacks, beer, wine or soft drinks to bring with you into the theatre. Our friendly ushers will greet you and assist you in finding your way to your seats – there’s not a bad seat in the house!

Our audience is diverse and you will see patrons of all ages and walks of life, including couples, singles, students, families, and groups of friends – jazz has never met a stranger and all are welcome.  Many of our guests are tourists visiting Charleston, and some of our regular attendees have been coming to concerts since the beginning of the organization.  We hope that you will become one of our “regulars” as well by joining the Charleston Jazz family by becoming a Season Subscriber, Member, Sponsor, Donor, Student or AdvertiserThere is a place for YOU at Charleston Jazz.

The caliber of performances are spectacular. Their musical selections appeal to all musical tastes regardless of age.
