It is my great pleasure to welcome you to this celebration of jazz in one of the most historic and culturally vibrant cities, Charleston. As our nation approaches the 250th Anniversary of the United States, we are reminded that jazz is one of America’s greatest cultural contributions to the world—an art form that reflects the spirit, creativity, and diversity of our country.
Born from the African American experience and shaped by generations of musicians, jazz tells the story of America itself. It is music built on freedom of expression, collaboration, resilience, and innovation—the very ideals that continue to define our nation. Charleston holds an important place in this history, from the legendary Jenkins Orphanage Band to the thriving community of artists and educators who carry this tradition forward today.
Charleston Jazz celebrates this living legacy throughout the year, including with the Charleston Jazz Festival. You will experience performances by extraordinary artists, including the remarkable musicians of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra, alongside internationally acclaimed guests and rising stars. These musicians represent the vibrancy and evolution of jazz—music that continues to grow while remaining deeply connected to its roots.
Equally important to the Festival is our commitment to education and community engagement. Visiting artists, including Danilo Pérez and Herlin Riley, share their talents with students across the region through masterclasses, school performances, and outreach programs, inspiring the next generation of musicians and creative thinkers.
As we gather to celebrate jazz, we also celebrate the enduring power of music to bring people together across cultures, generations, and communities. We are deeply grateful to the National Endowment for the Arts for their leadership support of the Festival, as well as to the many supporters, partners, sponsors, volunteers, and audience members who make this celebration possible.
Thank you for being part of this celebration. We hope you enjoy the music, discover new artists, and experience the joy and freedom that only jazz can bring.
