Camp Coltrane

Celebrate the legacy and revolutionary sound of jazz icon John Coltrane in honor of his 100th birthday. Designed for middle and high school musicians, Camp Coltrane offers an immersive experience in jazz combo playing, improvisation, and ensemble collaboration inspired by Coltrane’s groundbreaking music.

Students will deepen their musical skills while exploring Coltrane’s influence on jazz through guided rehearsals, creative expression, and live performance. The experience is elevated by special masterclasses with internationally acclaimed artists Chico Pinheiro (guitar) and Pedrito Martinez (percussion), who bring global perspectives and world-class artistry as featured performers of Spoleto Festival USA.

Charleston Jazz Academy’s Jazz Combo Camp is our signature summer program for young musicians of all levels. Through hands-on learning in improvisation, rhythm, music theory, and ensemble playing, students work with professional jazz artists in a fun, supportive environment—building skills, friendships, and a lifelong love of jazz.
