April is Jazz Appreciation Month—a time to recognize the rich legacy and vibrant future of this uniquely American art form. This year, Charleston Jazz is celebrating not only the music itself, but the deeper mission behind it: realizing dreams through music and preserving jazz as a living, evolving art form through education that is truly accessible to all.
At the heart of that mission is the Charleston Jazz Academy, which operates on a simple but powerful belief: every student deserves the opportunity to experience jazz. Through in-school partnerships, summer camps, and year-round classes, the Academy reaches students across the Lowcountry, introducing them to improvisation, collaboration, and self-expression. Jazz becomes more than music—it becomes a language for creativity and confidence. And with a robust scholarship program in place, financial barriers are removed, ensuring that passion and potential—not circumstance—determine who gets to participate.
This summer, the Academy invites young musicians to dive deeper through its dynamic Summer Jazz Combo Camps. Students entering seventh grade and above can choose the experience that best fits their interests: Camp Coltrane (June 1–5), It’s Electric (June 22–26), or All Blues (July 20–24). Each week offers hands-on ensemble playing, mentorship from professional musicians, and an immersive environment where students can grow both technically and artistically. These programs are supported in part by the South Carolina Arts Commission, with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts, helping sustain access to high-quality arts education throughout the region.
For those looking to connect with the local jazz community in a more informal setting, the Academy also hosts free monthly jazz jams on the last Sunday of each month. These sessions are open to everyone—seasoned musicians, students, and listeners alike—creating a welcoming space where people can sit in, share ideas, and celebrate the spontaneous spirit that defines jazz.
Throughout April and beyond, Charleston Jazz continues to invest in the future of the music—one student, one note, and one shared moment at a time.
