Tip of the Hat Award: Houston Person

Local Music Legend Houston Person to Receive 2025 Tip of the Hat Award at Charleston Jazz Gala

In loving memory of our co-founder Jack McCray and his signature hats, we proudly present the annual Tip of the Hat Award—an honor bestowed upon a jazz luminary whose artistry and spirit have made a lasting impact on the Charleston jazz community. In 2025, we are thrilled to recognize Houston Person, a true master of the tenor saxophone.

In jazz history, Houston Person stands among the great purveyors of the deep-throated tenor sound—powerful and swinging, yet sultry, bluesy, sensitive, and romantic. This celebration comes in anticipation of Person’s 90th birthday next month, with no hint of nostalgia; he remains a vital force, performing regularly around the world with the same soul and command that have defined his career.

Born November 10, 1934, in Florence, South Carolina, Person’s musical journey took him from South Carolina State University to service in the U.S. Air Force in West Germany, alongside fellow jazz greats, and later to graduate studies at the Hartt Institute. By the early 1960s, he had made his mark recording for Prestige Records, becoming a cornerstone of soulful jazz. His legendary partnership with vocalist Etta Jones—often compared to the timeless connection of Lester Young and Billie Holiday—remains one of jazz’s most cherished collaborations.

With an encyclopedic command of the American Songbook, Houston Person communicates melody, blues, and standards with a direct emotional honesty that resonates deeply with audiences. We are honored to tip our hats to an artist whose music continues to move hearts and whose legacy shines brightly in Charleston and beyond.
