From the Archives: Robert Lewis Quartet – The Acoustic Side of Michael Brecker
February 25, 2021 @ 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM EST
2019 Charleston Jazz Festival
Originally performed live on January 25, 2019
Michael Brecker was one of the most influential and beloved tenor saxophonists. His performances on hundreds of jazz, pop, R&B, and rock albums largely defined the sound of the saxophone through the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s. An underrated aspect of Brecker’s artistry are his incredible compositions. These are amazingly detailed works playing with harmonies, forms and melodies that had not been heard before, all the while keeping the fire and emotion of the greatest jazz.
During the 5th Annual Charleston Jazz Festival, the Robert Lewis Quartet performed several of these wonderful songs that showcase this colossal and acoustic side of Michael Brecker. Robert Lewis is the Director of Jazz Studies at the College of Charleston, the Director of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra, and one of the most talented saxophonists in South Carolina.
