Jazz Artists of Charleston (JAC) is honored to welcome renowned trombonist, vocalist, arranger, composer, bandleader, musical ambassador and music educator, WYCLIFFE GORDON, to the bandstand for HELLO POPS! A Tribute to Louis Armstrong on Saturday, October 24, 2015 as the Charleston Jazz Orchestra (CJO) pays tribute to one of the world’s greatest entertainers. According to music director, Charlton Singleton, “Louis Armstrong is one of Wycliffe Gordon’s favorite and most influential heroes. Whether it was through his horn or through his singing, Armstrong managed to excite audiences and inspire many musicians.”
The CJO and special guest artist, Wycliffe Gordon, are set to entertain and delight audiences with memorable arrangements including: Hello Pops (Wycliffe Gordon), Pops for President (Wycliffe Gordon), Hello Dolly (Arr. Charlton Singleton), and Portrait of Louis Armstrong (Arr. David Berger). The CJO has commissioned Wycliffe Gordon to pen a special piece for the band and this newly commissioned work will make its world premiere during the evening of the show.
The Charleston Jazz Orchestra is a twenty-piece big band comprised of many of Charleston’s finest musicians who play locally and around the globe. The orchestra debuted in March 2008 and has been electrifying audiences ever since. CJO performs all forms of jazz, and its repertoire includes blues, swing, Afro‐Cuban, pop, progressive, Latin, jazz standards, ballads, and sacred.
Tickets for HELLO POPS! are now on sale. The performance schedule includes two sets: 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Each set is a separate, 90-minute ticketed event with no intermission. All shows are performed at the band’s House of Swing, the Charleston Music Hall at 37 John Street. Adult tickets are priced at $35-$45, and senior tickets at $30-$40. College student tickets are priced at $10. Tickets for children age 7 to 18 are priced at $10 with purchase of regular price ticket. Children 6 and under have free admission with the purchase of a regular price ticket.
The Charleston Jazz Orchestra is produced and presented by Jazz Artists of Charleston (JAC), a South Carolina-based nonprofit organization incorporated to foster a professional environment for jazz musicians, artists, students and enthusiasts in the Charleston area. Its mission is to develop, promote, and support a vibrant and creative jazz culture through concerts, special outreach events, and educational programs. JAC endeavors to preserve and bolster Charleston’s rich musical history and legacy as it explores the various realms of jazz in terms of how it is created as well as its stylistic expressions.
