SUMMARY:RHYTHM AND FLOW: America’s Story at 250\, Panel Discussion and Performance
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1771527997717{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\nTuesday\, April 21\, 2026 | 6:00 PM\nFox Music House\nFree and open to the public\, registration encouraged but not required \n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Register Now” style=”custom” custom_background=”#A53360″ custom_text=”#FFFFFF” align=”center” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2FDVt51THYyVMWABGM8″][vc_column_text margin_bottom=”0″ css=”.vc_custom_1772564390962{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Jazz is more than music—it is a mirror of the American experience. As the United States marks its 250th anniversary\, this panel discussion explores how jazz has reflected the nation’s values\, challenged its contradictions\, and helped define its ideals of freedom\, expression\, and collective voice. \nThe conversation examines how Charleston and the broader American South helped set the rhythms and cadence of jazz\, shaping its evolution from local tradition to global art form. From sacred and social roots to improvisation and innovation\, panelists will consider the enduring values jazz has contributed to American culture. \nMaster drummer Herlin Riley and Director of the Charleston Jazz Academy\, Demetrius Doctor\, will be joined by Dr. Karen Chandler—co-founder of the Charleston Jazz Initiative\, which documents South Carolina’s profound influence on jazz in America and around the world—and Dr. Al Fraser\, co-author of To Be\, or Not . . . to Bop: Memoirs\, the 1979 autobiography of legendary trumpeter John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie\, for this dynamic\, community-centered conversation. The panel will be moderated by Larry Blumenfeld\, Spoleto Festival USA’s Jazz Curator and a contributor to The Wall Street Journal\, and will conclude with a performance by the Herlin Riley Quartet. \nThe Herlin Riley performance and education programs are presented as part of Jazz Is Community\, an initiative in partnership with Spoleto Festival USA. The education components include an in-school performance\, a masterclass at the Charleston Jazz Academy\, and the public Rhythm and Flow panel discussion and performance. \n\nThis initiative is generously supported by the Donaldson Charitable Trust and Hilton C. Smith Jr.\, and in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the South Carolina Arts Commission. \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_empty_space height=”64px”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

His innovative contributions to jazz\, soul\, funk\, and classical music have earned him recognition as a master musician of every era. In the HBO series Treme\, director David Simon depicted Harrison’s musical innovations through two characters. Harrison acted and played music in Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme’s film Rachel Getting Married\, Spike Lee’s documentary When the Levees Broke\, and Marvel’s Luke Cage. \nAs the recognized Big Chief of Congo Square in Afro-New Orleans culture and a Chief in the Democratic Republic of Congo\, Africa\, Harrison’s influence spans continents. His extensive musical journey includes collaborations with jazz luminaries such as Miles Davis\, McCoy Tyner\, and Ron Carter\, among many others. Harrison’s contributions to jazz extend beyond performance. He pioneered four influential jazz styles\, including the modern jazz take on the New Orleans second-line tradition\, nouveau swing\, quantum improvisation with quantum theorist  Dr. Stephon Alexander\, and multi-genre singles.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1741699961522{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]In 2022\, Harrison was honored with the prestigious NEA Jazz Master Award\, recognizing his significant contributions to the genre. Harrison mentored diverse artists throughout his career\, from The Notorious B.I.G. to Jon Batiste\, Christian Scott\, Trombone Shorty\, and Esperanza Spalding. His exploration of music through the lens of quantum physics in the 2000s further expanded the boundaries of jazz\, demonstrating his enduring commitment to innovation and creativity. His upcoming recording\, “The Magic Touch\,” showcases his multi-genre approach to music. It is one song played in nine different genres. The first eight styles are post-bop\, blues\, bossa nova\, reggae\, hip-hop\, second-line\, soul\, and salsa are true to their styles. The ninth version mixes the first eight styles into a coalesced modern jazz style. It is an example of his nouveau swing style\, which uses his experiences playing with jazz’s master innovators from every era to create his concepts.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][/vc_section][vc_section][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1741699335105{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]About Larry Blumenfeld: \nLARRY BLUMENFELD is Jazz Curator for Spoleto Festival USA. He has written regularly about music and culture for The Wall Street Journal since 2004. His work has also appeared in The Village Voice\, The New York Times\, New Orleans Times Picayune\, Daily Beast\, NPR\, Salon and TIDAL\, among other publications and websites.
