A unique musical experience\, an exciting mixture of Cuban musical tradition\, and an experience known around the world as the Buena Vista Social Club. On September 17\, 2022\, your Charleston Jazz Orchestra and the Buena Vista Legacy Band will honor the collaborative spirit of the original Buena Vista Social Club with CUBAN CARNIVAL\, creating a once in a lifetime experience at the Charleston Music Hall! \nAs a collaboration between old friends from Charleston and La Habana\, the Buena Vista Legacy Band originated to perform a tribute to the iconic band immortalized in Wim Wender’s 1999 Documentary film Buena Vista Social Club. The band incorporates several young Cuban musicians who have performed with some of the original members of Buena Vista and who are recognized as new legends on the Island. \nBuena Vista Legacy Band features several talented musicians from Cuba\, including Yusa on the Cuban tres and vocals\, Calixto Oviedo on drums and Jorge García on guitar.  The band also brings Venezuelan-born musical director Abdiel Iriarte on piano\, Iliana Rose also on piano\, Gino Castillo of Ecuador on vocals and percussion\, Jake Holwegner on upright bass\, Mark Rapp on trumpet\, and Ron Wiltrout on percussion.  In addition\, the performance will feature a special appearance by Charlton Singleton. Together\, the group aims to serve as an instrument carrying the old Cuban music to a new generation. \nSEPTEMBER 17\, 2022\nTWO SETS: 5PM + 8PM \nSenior (65+) and Military Rates\n$10 Student Rates Available | Children 6 and under are FREE*\n*Must call Box Office for Student/Child Rate at 843.641.0011 \nSave 10% with a Season Subscription + Save 5% with a Trio Pass Package.\nYour ticket purchase will include access to the virtual performance.\nIf you need assistance or want to purchase a Wheelchair Space + Companion Seat\, please call the box office at 843.641.0011. \n  \n \nAbout the Buena Vista Legacy Band\nBuena Vista Legacy Band originated in Charleston\, South Carolina\, after Charleston Music Hall director Charles Carmody called Gino Castillo\, band leader of the Cuban Cowboys\, with a proposal to do a tribute to the iconic band immortalized in Wim Wender’s 1999 Documentary film Buena Vista Social Club. \nThe idea was to incorporate into the project several young\, Cuban musicians who are recognized as new legends on the Island. Having performed with some of the original members of Buena Vista\, these musicians were also part of Wender’s second movie\, The Sons of Cuba. \nThis began a collaboration between old friends from Charleston and La Habana\, resulting in a concert showcase first performed at the Charleston Music Hall on October 11th\, 2019. The project was also a part of a mini documentary that\, on a much smaller scale\, respectfully recalls the original film from the 1990’s. \n  \n \n[vc_empty_space][vc_separator][vc_empty_space] This concert will be available as a virtual performance on October 8 (View HERE).\n

From April 21 – 24\, 2022\, the 2022 Charleston Jazz Festival will feature student musicians\, local jazz groups\, and internationally acclaimed performers including the Emmet Cohen Trio\, Lucy Yeghiazaryan\, Bruce Harris\, the Jorge Luis Pacheco Quartet\, Kandace Springs and Etienne Charles & Creole Soul. \nDuring Carnival\, the island of Trinidad becomes engulfed in a cacophony of sounds – from singing\, to the clash of stick fights\, and lively calypso music with its hallmark steel pan cadences. As a Trinidadian raised in a musical family\, trumpeter Etienne Charles feels a deep connection to the Carnival traditions. At a young age he joined his father’s steel band\, performing at Carnival fetes\, and immersing himself in the folklore. Through Etienne’s Guggenheim Fellowship Award\, he returns to his roots to celebrate the traditions that best exemplify Trinidadian culture. Inspired by the noises heard throughout the festivities\, Etienne’s Carnival: The Sound of a People brings the celebrations to the stage. \nHailed by The New York Times as “an auteur” and by JazzTimes as “A daring improviser who delivers with heart wrenching lyricism\,” NPR’s All Things Considered calls Etienne\, “a great young trumpeter…his records filter calypso\, reggae and other Afro-Caribbean music into a modern jazz conception.” Critics and audiences alike continue to praise the Trinidadian’s exciting performances\, thrilling compositions\, and his charismatic onstage presence. Etienne is a Guggenheim Fellow in the Creative Arts\, an Associate Professor of Studio Music and Jazz at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami\, and has been written in to US Congressional Record for his musical contributions to Trinidad & Tobago and the World. \nSaturday\, April 23\, 2022\n8pm  |  Doors Open: 7pm\nCharleston Music Hall \nTickets: $20 – $45 | $10 Student Tickets\nSave $10 off total price with a 2-Show Pass  |  Save $25 off total price with a 4-Show Ticket Pass \nIf you need assistance or need to purchase a Wheelchair Space + Companion Seat\, please call the box office at 843.641.0011.  \nFeaturing\nEtienne Charles\, Trumpet\, Cajon\nGodwin Louis\, Saxophone\nAlex Wintz\, Guitar\nChristian Sands\, Piano\nRussell Hall\, Bass\nHarvel Nakundi\, Drums \nSpecial Guest – Quentin Baxter\, Percussion \n \n  \n \n\n\n  \n[vc_empty_space][vc_separator][vc_empty_space] Check out other Charleston Jazz events HERE.

Entitled The Women Who Raised Me\, it is her loving tribute to the great female singers who inspired her to begin her journey towards becoming one of the premier jazz/soul vocalists of our time. The album will feature her unique interpretations of songs that she first heard growing up in Tennessee\, and ranges from such classic icons as Billie Holiday\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and Carmen McRae\, through 60’s legends Nina Simone and Dusty Springfield\, and up to modern masters such as Sade and Lauryn Hill. \n“My father used to play me records when I was young\, and I fell in love right away with all these great singers”\, says Springs. “I literally learned to do what I do by singing along with them. Ever since\, I’ve wanted to pay that forward by reminding people of how great these ladies are; we all owe them so much.” \nBut at the center as always is Kandace’s unique piano style and soul-drenched vocals\, and never has the Nashville native sounded so at home in the studio. “I felt so comfortable singing these songs\, they are like old friends\, and with such great musicians around me I knew we would make magic. From April 21 – 24\, 2022\, the 2022 Charleston Jazz Festival will feature student musicians\, local jazz groups\, and internationally acclaimed performers including the Emmet Cohen Trio\, Lucy Yeghiazaryan\, Bruce Harris\, the Jorge Luis Pacheco Quartet\, Kandace Springs and Etienne Charles & Creole Soul. \nMultifaceted American jazz pianist and composer Emmet Cohen is one of his generation’s pivotal figures in music and the related arts. Downbeat praised the “nimble touch\, measured stride and warm harmonic vocabulary” he employs to communicate with other musicians and audiences at what he terms “the deepest level of humanity and individuality.” Leader of the “Emmet Cohen Trio” and creator of the “Masters Legacy Series\,” Cohen is an internationally acclaimed jazz artist and dedicated music educator. \nEmmet Cohen is the winner of the 2019 American Pianists Awards and the Cole Porter Fellow of the American Pianists Association. He also was a finalist in the 2011 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition. Cohen has appeared at major international jazz festivals and at Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall and Washington’s Kennedy Center\, in addition to headlining at the Village Vanguard and other major New York jazz clubs. During the lockdown he created “Live From Emmet’s Place\,” a weekly livestream that received millions of internet views worldwide. It mirrors the Harlem Rent Parties that sprung up 100 years ago–the roaring twenties of the 1900’s. It is their modern\, digital version\, which supported many jazz musicians and listeners during the hardships of 2020/21. \nAs a young immigrant who has brought the real richness of her heritage together with her love for what is truly American\, Lucy Yeghiazaryan beautifully sounds out the best expression of the American dream. Yeghiazaryan has established herself as a leading voice in the world of straight ahead vocal jazz in and outside of New York City. \nBorn and raised in the Bronx\, NY\, trumpeter Bruce Harris has earned a reputation as one of the most important and emerging voices in jazz today. Bruce Harris’s professional career as a performer has been defined by his infectious joy\, undeniable passion and youthful energy. \nFeaturing\nEmmet Cohen\, Piano\nLucy Yeghiazaryan\, Voice\nBruce Harris\, Trumpet\nPhillip Norris\, Bass\nKyle Poole\, Drums \nFriday\, April 22\, 2022\n5pm  |  Doors Open: 4pm\nCharleston Music Hall \nTickets: $20 – $45 | $10 Student Tickets\nSave $10 off total price with a 2-Show Pass  |  Save $25 off total price with a 4-Show Ticket Pass \nIf you need assistance or need to purchase a Wheelchair Space + Companion Seat\, please call the box office at 843.641.0011. \n\n\n \n  \n \n\n\n[vc_empty_space][vc_separator][vc_empty_space] Check out the full schedule of the 2022 Charleston Jazz Festival HERE.

SUMMARY:The Crossover
DESCRIPTION:There can be a fine line between some of the world’s best-known Jazz and R&B artists. Over the years we have seen tremendous “crossover” from some of the most beloved R&B artists into the Jazz category and vice-versa. George Benson\, Al Jarreau\, and the late Grover Washington\, Jr.\, are just a few of the household names that were able to seamlessly go in and out of both Jazz and R&B with ease and much success. GRAMMY Award Winner Charlton Singleton presents his band\, Contemporary Flow\, in a night of songs that have made the crossover\, as well as tunes from his latest solo Contemporary Jazz project\, “Datenight”. \nCharlton Singleton – Trumpet/Vocal\nStephen Washington – Keyboards\nGreg Loney – Guitar\nLaVonta Green – Bass\nJames “JT” Rollerson – Drums \n
