SUMMARY:Listening Shed
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1728571240470{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\nHost: Robert Lewis \nCharleston Jazz Academy \nFREE – Open To All \n  \n\nThe Listening Shed is an opportunity to shine a light on the most important aspect of understanding jazz: listening! It will be a chance for students and jazz lovers alike to experience how jazz professionals listen to and gain insights from music. Every Thursday in November (aside from Thanksgiving)\, we will have a professional from the community present records that have been impactful in their learning of this music. The musicians will highlight subtleties that may be easily missed\, foundational elements of jazz\, and specific aspects that each particular musician appreciates in this informal\, fun gathering of musicians and enthusiasts. The “shed” is important for musicians—it’s where we work out our ideas and find our voice in this continuum. With the Listening Shed\, we hope to bring that same significance to everyone’s first experience with this music! \n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Many deserving students\, when faced with the challenging format of the audition process\, underperform when they know they could do much better. Our audition experts will help prepare all students by providing strategies for audition success! \n  \nOur workshop is designed to prepare all students at every level\, whether Junior (grade 8 and below)\, Clinic (grade 9-10)\, or Senior (grade 11-12). Whether students are auditioning for the first time or have auditioned in the past and didn’t do well\, the Region/All-State Audition Workshop will improve their performance. If a student has earned a seat in the Region or All-State Band and want to move to a higher chair\, this workshop can help\, too! \n  \nThis intensive\, four-hour workshop will cover topics\, such as: \n  \n\nUnderstanding the audition format and how to mentally prepare for each requirement\nHow to prepare and perform the required scales as well as the chromatic\nPerforming the solo is more than notes and rhythms. How to rise above the pack!\nProper breathing (even drummers need this!) and how it makes a difference\nSIGHT READING! How to overcome your fear and boost your score (see below)\n\n  \nA major portion of the workshop is about how to prepare for sight reading.  There is a misconception about how to “practice” sight reading.  We will show students proven strategies on how to prepare to have a better sight reading score and a less stressful experience in this important part of the audition. \n  \nThe workshop will feature experienced brass\, woodwind and percussion teachers led by Basil Kerr\, former Wando and School of the Arts band director and current head of the Charleston Jazz Academy. \n  \nThe workshop schedule is as follows: \n  \n9:00—Introduction to the audition process- “How to Play the Game” \n\nMental preparation is important!\nYou directly control most of the audition result. How?\nSight Reading should not be the enemy.\nForgive yourself!\n\n10:00- Instrument-specific sessions— \n\nBrasses\nWoodwinds\nPercussion\n\n  \nThese sessions will cover strategies specific to your instrument and your level! \n  \n11:00- Sight Reading Strategies for Success! \n\nCommon errors when approaching this part of the audition\nMental preparation\n“Practice before playing”- how to do it\nSight reading examples will be handed out for each level\n\n  \n12:00- “You Be the Judge!” – Mock audition to review the format \n\nHear how the adjudicators make decisions about specific situations.\nQ & A session\n\n  \nWhat to bring: Your instrument\, audition solo and any related audition materials you may have. \n  \nWhat you will receive: Students attending the workshop will receive practice materials\, a copy of the audition rubrics\, sample scoresheets\, and more!  There will be a practice audition session before the official Region Band Audition so you can get ready for the real thing![/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Jazz Workshop: Abdullah Ibrahim
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1685462028620{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\nJoin us at Fox Music House for an inspirational morning with renowned jazz artist Abdullah Ibrahim who will offer instruction and inspiration to students of all levels\, and share details of his distinctive pianism\, the elements that have influenced it\, and his music’s rich history. \nAbdullah Ibrahim\, South Africa’s most distinguished pianist\, was born in Cape Town. The young “Dollar Brand\,” as he became known early on\, was exposed to American jazz\, township jive\, Cape Malay music\, and classical music. Out of this blend of the secular and the religious\, the traditional and the modern\, he developed his distinctive style and musical vocabulary. In 1963\, Duke Ellington heard his band play\, which led to a recording session in Paris: Duke Ellington presents the Dollar Brand Trio. Ibrahim’s music was inseparable from the anti-apartheid movement in his native country; his 1974 recording\, “Mannenberg –‘Is where it’s happening’” was an unofficial national anthem for Black South Africans. At 88\, he is a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master and among the great statesmen of culture. His groundbreaking ensemble is named Ekaya\, the Zulu word for “Homeland.” \nThis program is presented in partnership with Spoleto Festival USA. Abdullah Ibrahim will perform during the Spoleto Festival USA on June 8th at 9pm at the Cistern Yard. For more information\, please visit https://spoletousa.org/events/abdullah-ibrahim-and-ekaya \nFree Event – Open To The Public[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/FxSVn_59gCw”][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_gmaps link=”#E-8_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”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1680901168345{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\nFox Music House\n\n4248 Dorchester Rd\nNorth Charleston\, SC 29405\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
