CHARLESTON, SC – JANUARAY 31, 2017 – The Charleston Jazz Orchestra (CJO) will kick off its ninth season with a concert entitled “SINGIN’ ELLINGTON: The Duke and His Vocalists.” American Idol Season 2 winner, Ruben Studdard, will be a special guest vocalist with the CJO on February 18 at the Charleston Music Hall.

Ruben has released six studio albums, including his platinum-selling debut ‘Soulful’, and the top-selling gospel follow-up, ‘I Need an Angel’. Ruben will join CJO Music Director, Charlton Singleton, as they recreate the famous collaboration between Frank Sinatra and Duke Ellington.
Duke Ellington is one of the greatest composers and jazz musicians of all time. He is best remembered for the over 3,000 songs he composed during his lifetime including It Don’t Mean a Thing if It Ain’t Got That Swing, Sophisticated Lady, Mood Indigo, Solitude, and Satin Doll. The CJO and Studdard will celebrate Duke Ellington’s musical genius and some of the famous vocalists who sang with his band.

“When Frank Sinatra and Duke Ellington collaborated to produce a monumental recording, it was the meeting of two of the world’s most famous artists,” said Charlton Singleton, Music Director of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra. “As we kick off our Season 9, we are excited to be recreating that recording with Ruben Studdard. Since bursting on the scene as the Season 2 winner of American Idol, Ruben quickly established himself as one of the greatest voices of our generation. His talent and stage presence, along with the high quality musicianship of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra make this one of the most exciting and must see events in our great city of Charleston.”
