CHARLESTON, SC – In collaboration with Spoleto Festival USA, Charleston Jazz is excited to host Wells Fargo Jazz Series performing artists, David Virelles and Terri Lyne Carrington, at our education facility, the Charleston Jazz Academy (3005 W. Montague Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29418) for a FREE Workshop Series. All ages and experience levels are welcome. The Charleston Jazz Academy is the only school in Charleston dedicated to nurturing the next generation of jazz artists. Enrollment has reached 130 students with 87% learning jazz on a full-scholarship. The scholarships cultivate talent found in underserved communities throughout the Charleston area.

David Carter, Director of Education and Outreach, is building an inviting and safe place for students to make music. “The goal at the Charleston Jazz Academy is to not only nurture the next generation of jazz artists, but provide an accessible, inspiring and supportive environment for our youth to thrive through the language of jazz.”

In addition to offering private and group lessons, the Charleston Jazz Academy presents workshops, masterclasses, and summer camps.

WORKSHOP SERIES SCHEDULE:

May 28, 2019, 1PM – 2:15PM: David Virelles

In collaboration with Spoleto Festival USA, we are excited to host Wells Fargo Jazz Series performing artist David Virelles at the Charleston Jazz Academy on May 28, 2019 from 1pm – 2:15pm. Born in Cuba in 1983, Virelles was raised in a musical family. Discovering his grandfather’s jazz collection ignited a passion and changed his life’s musical direction. Gain insight from David Virelles’s personal musical experiences as a pianist and composer and learn Cuban music traditions in this free workshop.

May 29, 2019, 6PM – 7:15PM: Terri Lyne Carrington

In collaboration with Spoleto Festival USA, we are excited to host Wells Fargo Jazz Series performing artist Terri Lyne Carrington at the Charleston Jazz Academy on May 29, 2019 from 6pm – 7:15pm. At the age of seven, Carrington was given a set of drums that had belonged to her grandfather, and at the age of 11, she received a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music. Throughout her extensive touring and recording career, she has worked with luminary artists such as Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz, Dianne Reeves, and many more! Don’t miss this chance to learn from the first female artist to win a Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album in this free workshop.
