A National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master and cultural ambassador\, alto saxophonist Donald Harrison masterfully blends traditional New Orleans sounds with modern jazz\, funk and more\, creating a style as vibrant and dynamic as the city he calls home and as broad as jazz gets.  \nAfter an early stint in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers\, Harrison has gone on to be among the most distinctive and wide-ranging of jazz bandleaders and among the most sought-after band members\, working regularly with the likes of Ron Carter\, The Headhunters and The Cookers. His high-energy grooves\, fluid improvisation\, and soulful melodies move from bebop to soul to funk and have entranced audiences around the world. In his hometown\, New Orleans\, he is known as “Big Chief” for his pivotal role in preserving and promoting a tradition of Afro-New Orleans Cultural Groups he inherited from his father\, and that is a vital element of community organization. Don’t miss this spectacular closing concert\, where the Big Chief and his quartet will capture the spirit of New Orleans\, celebrating the legacy and future of jazz in an unforgettable performance. \nDONALD HARRISON – ALTO SAXOPHONE \nDAN KAUFMAN – PIANO \nNORI NARAOKA – BASS \nJOE DYSON – DRUMS \nThis performance and the related education programs are made possible by the Oliver S. and Jennie R. His innovative contributions to jazz\, soul\, funk\, and classical music have earned him recognition as a master musician of every era. In the HBO series Treme\, director David Simon depicted Harrison’s musical innovations through two characters. Harrison acted and played music in Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme’s film Rachel Getting Married\, Spike Lee’s documentary When the Levees Broke\, and Marvel’s Luke Cage.\n\nAs the recognized Big Chief of Congo Square in Afro-New Orleans culture and a Chief in the Democratic Republic of Congo\, Africa\, Harrison’s influence spans continents. His extensive musical journey includes collaborations with jazz luminaries such as Miles Davis\, McCoy Tyner\, and Ron Carter\, among many others. Harrison’s contributions to jazz extend beyond performance. He pioneered four influential jazz styles\, including the modern jazz take on the New Orleans second-line tradition\, nouveau swing\, quantum improvisation with quantum theorist  Dr. Stephon Alexander\, and multi-genre singles.\n\nIn 2022\, Harrison was honored with the prestigious NEA Jazz Master Award\, recognizing his significant contributions to the genre. Harrison mentored diverse artists throughout his career\, from The Notorious B.I.G. to Jon Batiste\, Christian Scott\, Trombone Shorty\, and Esperanza Spalding. His exploration of music through the lens of quantum physics in the 2000s further expanded the boundaries of jazz\, demonstrating his enduring commitment to innovation and creativity. His upcoming recording\, “The Magic Touch\,” showcases his multi-genre approach to music. It is one song played in nine different genres. The first eight styles are post-bop\, blues\, bossa nova\, reggae\, hip-hop\, second-line\, soul\, and salsa are true to their styles. The ninth version mixes the first eight styles into a coalesced modern jazz style. It is an example of his nouveau swing style\, which uses his experiences playing with jazz’s master innovators from every era to create his concepts.\n\nLearn more here: https://donaldharrison.com/big-chief-donald-harrison  \nAnd here: https://www.arts.gov/honors/jazz/donald-harrison-jr [/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkBzAI4CZhQ”][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_section disable_element=”yes”][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][vc_single_image image=”20450″ img_size=”full” css=””][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][vc_single_image image=”20449″ img_size=”full” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1728330342595{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Charleston Jazz Festival \nThe annual Charleston Jazz Festival\, set in the beautiful coastal city of Charleston\, South Carolina\, is a highly anticipated celebration of the city’s rich jazz heritage.
