Our friendly ushers will greet you and assist you in finding your way to your seats – there’s not a bad seat in the house! \nOur audience is diverse and you will see patrons of all ages and walks of life\, including couples\, singles\, students\, families\, and groups of friends – jazz has never met a stranger and all are welcome.  Many of our guests are tourists visiting Charleston\, and some of our regular attendees have been coming to concerts since the beginning of the organization.  We hope that you will become one of our “regulars” as well by joining the Charleston Jazz family by becoming a Season Subscriber\, Member\, Sponsor\, Donor\, Student or Advertiser.  There is a place for YOU at Charleston Jazz. \n  \nI have been a season ticket holder since the inception of Charleston Jazz Orchestra for many wonderful reasons. The caliber of performances are spectacular. Their musical selections appeal to all musical tastes regardless of age. The Music Hall is the perfect venue for such a group of phenomenal artists. \n★ ★ ★ ★ ★ \nLil H.\, Google Review \n  \nWe love the Charleston Jazz Orchestra! DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1728571240470{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\nHost: Robert Lewis \nCharleston Jazz Academy \nFREE – Open To All \n  \n\nThe Listening Shed is an opportunity to shine a light on the most important aspect of understanding jazz: listening! It will be a chance for students and jazz lovers alike to experience how jazz professionals listen to and gain insights from music. Every Thursday in November (aside from Thanksgiving)\, we will have a professional from the community present records that have been impactful in their learning of this music. The musicians will highlight subtleties that may be easily missed\, foundational elements of jazz\, and specific aspects that each particular musician appreciates in this informal\, fun gathering of musicians and enthusiasts. The “shed” is important for musicians—it’s where we work out our ideas and find our voice in this continuum. With the Listening Shed\, we hope to bring that same significance to everyone’s first experience with this music! \n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

While in the Big Easy\, he was able to craft his own sound by listening and playing with some of the best local musicians. He spearheaded a project called NuSpeak\,  which would go on to play at Tipitina’s and other local venues. At the same time\, he would gig with his trio throughout the city and end up playing at Jazz Fest as well. After graduating from college he moved back to his hometown where he is now a staple piano player throughout the Charleston area. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_video link=”https://youtube.com/shorts/Aq1y3aEBRMM?si=yDSxCfgBrVP9784-“][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Many of the materials used to build the elegant\, barn-inspired space were taken from our roots on Wadmalaw Island\, with elements purchased from local craftsmen or refurbished from a rustic barn. \nHome of the world’s first Sweet Tea Vodka\, Firefly continues to make great spirits. From our popular original vodkas to our maritime influenced bourbon\, and lineup of 11 moonshine flavors\, Firefly has grown to include more than 30 innovative spirits. \nThe Charleston Jazz Festival audience is diverse and you will see patrons of all ages and walks of life\, including couples\, singles\, students\, families\, and groups of friends – jazz has never met a stranger and all are welcome. \n  \nThe caliber of performances are spectacular. All the while\, they carry it enthusiastically forward as a reminder that the history they were founded to preserve is a vibrantly living history. \nThe Preservation Hall Jazz Band marches Crescent City tradition forward in their brilliant stage performances. The group redefines what New Orleans music means today by tapping into a sonic continuum that stretches back to the city’s Afro-Cuban roots\, through its common ancestry with the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the Fire Music of Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane. The band has spread their hometown’s iconic sound to festival stages from Coachella to Newport\, performing among peers and legends like Stevie Wonder\, Elvis Costello\, and the Grateful Dead\, as well as modern giants like Beck\, The Foo Fighters\, My Morning Jacket and the Black Keys. \n  \nClint Maedgen – Saxophone\, Vocals\nBranden Lewis – Trumpet\, Vocals\nRevon Andrews – Trombone\, Vocals\nKyle Roussel – Piano\nKerry Lewis – Bass\, Tuba\nPeter Varnado – Drums\n\nConcert Length: 90 min (no intermission) \n  \nThe Charleston Jazz Festival is sponsored in part by MUSC.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1701123582498{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\n\n“The Preservation Hall Jazz Band [is] a quintessential New Orleans institution” \n~ The New York Times \n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/5″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/5″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/5″][vc_single_image image=”14171″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/5″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/5″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”17877″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1701123080380{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\nWatch this clip from a Preservation Hall Jazz Band performance!\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Eb23IS5Q8w”][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_gmaps link=”#E-8_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”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1674170606429{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Charleston Music Hall \n37 John Street\, Charleston\, SC 29403 \ncharlestonmusichall.com \n  \nParking: \nCamden Garage\n47 John St\, Charleston\, SC 29403 \nCharleston Visitors Center Parking Garage\n73 Mary St\, Charleston\, SC 29403 \nMarion Square Garage\n399 King St\, Charleston\, SC 29403[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]\n  \nIMPORTANT INFORMATION\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_tta_accordion style=”flat” shape=”square” active_section=”1″][vc_tta_section title=”The Experience” tab_id=”1687923810144-42574a89-d6c9″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1701113848093{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Celebrated as one of the best things to do in Charleston\, SC\, the Charleston Jazz Festival is an unforgettable experience.  If you are new to the jazz genre\, take a risk and surprise yourself.  Jazz is an integral part of Charleston’s history and culture.  Lowcountry Gullah and Geechie praise house rhythms have been passed down through the generations\, leaving a distinctive and indelible mark on the jazz art form.  As one of the early cradles of jazz\, Charleston is proud to host this annual festival in one of the most significant jazz destinations in the world. \nWhen you step through the doors of the Charleston Music Hall you are stepping back in time into a circa 1849 train station\, historically known as the Tower Depot.  You will hear the iconic sounds of jazz wafting through the lobby\, reminiscent of the city’s rich jazz history.  Stop by one of the lobby bars on the lower or upper lever to purchase snacks\, beer\, wine or soft drinks to bring with you into the theatre. One of the goals of the day is to help girls prepare for their All-State jazz auditions\, although this is not a requirement to attend. The idea behind Jazz Girls Day is not only to welcome girls to start or continue playing jazz but also encourage music educators to encourage girls to play jazz. \n  \nThis program is for all instrumentalists and vocalists (traditional AND non-traditional) at all levels. The only prerequisites are middle and high school students who identify as female. Accompanying adults are welcome as well! \n  \nFREE—please RSVP above.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”19080″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”19078″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”19079″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1707506279674{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\nPhoto Credit \n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row]
