Our friendly ushers will greet you and assist you in finding your way to your seats – there’s not a bad seat in the house! \nOur audience is diverse and you will see patrons of all ages and walks of life\, including couples\, singles\, students\, families\, and groups of friends – jazz has never met a stranger and all are welcome.  Many of our guests are tourists visiting Charleston\, and some of our regular attendees have been coming to concerts since the beginning of the organization.  We hope that you will become one of our “regulars” as well by joining the Charleston Jazz family by becoming a Season Subscriber\, Member\, Sponsor\, Donor\, Student or Advertiser.  There is a place for YOU at Charleston Jazz. \n  \nI have been a season ticket holder since the inception of Charleston Jazz Orchestra for many wonderful reasons. This program is in anticipation of Person’s 90th birthday next month\, without any wistful nostalgia as he is still going strong performing regularly around the world.Houston Person was born on November 10\, 1934 in Florence\, South Carolina. He was musically inclined as a child\, and then studied at South Carolina State University. After college\, Person entered the service and was stationed in West Germany for several years in an Air Force unit that included Cedar Walton\, Lex Humphries\, and Eddie Harris\, among other jazz musicians who became lifelong friends and influences.Upon discharge from the service\, Person returned stateside for further studies in graduate school at the prestigious Hartt Institute in Connecticut. Person finally began making his way in the professional jazz world in the Boston/New England area. By the early 1960’s he had established his mark and began recording for Prestige Records. Person’s style also fit into the soulful jazz of the period and graces many live bands and recordings in that groove.By the 1970’s\, Houston met up with the awe-inspiring vocalist Etta Jones\, and after some occasional collaborations they started a steady working partnership that lasted until Etta’s death from cancer in 2001. Their musical and personal teamwork and connection was so intense that they were often mistaken as a married couple\, and feted as a continued legacy of the Lester Young and Billie Holiday collaboration.Person has a masterful and encyclopedic command of the American popular songbook. He conveys the meanings of these songs\, and also the blues\, and jazz standards\, in a straightforward manner that engages the audience with a direct emotional connection. This style marked his work with Etta\, and even more so his continued regular performances with his own combos\, or as a guest artist in demand with countless groups. \nBio sourced from columbia.edu[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”22233″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1749563392279{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]About Quentin Baxter \nQuentin E. He has earned multiple GRAMMY nominations\, the South Carolina Governor’s Award for the Arts\, and several other honors recognizing his artistic and educational contributions. Baxter tours internationally with RANKY TANKY and René Marie\, performing at top venues and festivals worldwide. Equally dedicated to education and community\, he served over two decades as an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston. His innovative contributions to jazz\, soul\, funk\, and classical music have earned him recognition as a master musician of every era. In the HBO series Treme\, director David Simon depicted Harrison’s musical innovations through two characters. Harrison acted and played music in Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme’s film Rachel Getting Married\, Spike Lee’s documentary When the Levees Broke\, and Marvel’s Luke Cage. \nAs the recognized Big Chief of Congo Square in Afro-New Orleans culture and a Chief in the Democratic Republic of Congo\, Africa\, Harrison’s influence spans continents. His extensive musical journey includes collaborations with jazz luminaries such as Miles Davis\, McCoy Tyner\, and Ron Carter\, among many others. Harrison’s contributions to jazz extend beyond performance. He pioneered four influential jazz styles\, including the modern jazz take on the New Orleans second-line tradition\, nouveau swing\, quantum improvisation with quantum theorist  Dr. Stephon Alexander\, and multi-genre singles.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1741699961522{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]In 2022\, Harrison was honored with the prestigious NEA Jazz Master Award\, recognizing his significant contributions to the genre. Harrison mentored diverse artists throughout his career\, from The Notorious B.I.G. to Jon Batiste\, Christian Scott\, Trombone Shorty\, and Esperanza Spalding. His exploration of music through the lens of quantum physics in the 2000s further expanded the boundaries of jazz\, demonstrating his enduring commitment to innovation and creativity. His upcoming recording\, “The Magic Touch\,” showcases his multi-genre approach to music. It is one song played in nine different genres. The first eight styles are post-bop\, blues\, bossa nova\, reggae\, hip-hop\, second-line\, soul\, and salsa are true to their styles. The ninth version mixes the first eight styles into a coalesced modern jazz style. It is an example of his nouveau swing style\, which uses his experiences playing with jazz’s master innovators from every era to create his concepts.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][/vc_section][vc_section][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1741699335105{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]About Larry Blumenfeld: \nLARRY BLUMENFELD is Jazz Curator for Spoleto Festival USA.
