At a tender age\, he faced discouragement from his first teacher\, who dismissed him as devoid of talent. Undeterred\, Rodriguez’s love for the piano persisted\, even in the absence of an instrument at home. He resorted to painting piano keys on his parents’ dinner table to practice his scales—a testament to his determination and resourcefulness. \nEventually\, Alfredo was invited to represent Cuba at the Montreux Jazz Festival\, where he impressed Quincy Jones. Jones saw the immense talent in Rodriguez and extended an invitation to work together in the U.S. However\, pursuing this opportunity meant leaving his family behind and embarking on a journey that would require relinquishing his Cuban citizenship. \nSince then\, Rodriguez has achieved remarkable milestones. He has graced prestigious stages worldwide and earned a Grammy® nomination for his track “Guantanamera” from the album The Invasion Parade. Additionally\, he became the first non-Chinese artist to collaborate on the English version of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo theme song\, working alongside esteemed musicians such as Tan Dun\, Siedah Garrett\, and Quincy Jones. \nBeyond his accomplishments\, Rodriguez’s ability to “play stories” on the keys allows him to connect with his listeners on a deeply personal level. His albums\, including The Invasion Parade\, Tocororo\, and Duologue\, reflect his memories of Cuba\, his experiences as an immigrant\, and his journey of self-discovery through music. He’s been featured by All Things Considered\, Downbeat\, The New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, and Wall Street Journal among many others\, and performed for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert. \nRodriguez continues to share his music along with his impactful message of perseverance and cross culturalization on an international tour\, while sharing a variety of viral social media videos in which he plays well-known compositions in a Cuban timba style.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][/vc_section][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rC6rPhL2Kpo”][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][vc_tta_accordion style=”flat” shape=”square” active_section=”1″][vc_tta_section title=”The Experience” tab_id=”1687923810144-42574a89-d6c9″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1764011963081{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]We’re excited to welcome you to the 2026 Charleston Jazz Festival\, now expanded to an incredible 9 days of jazz events. Our friendly ushers will greet you and assist you in finding your way to your seats – there’s not a bad seat in the house! \nOur audience is diverse and you will see patrons of all ages and walks of life\, including couples\, singles\, students\, families\, and groups of friends – jazz has never met a stranger and all are welcome.  Many of our guests are tourists visiting Charleston\, and some of our regular attendees have been coming to concerts since the beginning of the organization.  We hope that you will become one of our “regulars” as well by joining the Charleston Jazz family by becoming a Season Subscriber\, Member\, Sponsor\, Donor\, Student or Advertiser.  There is a place for YOU at Charleston Jazz. \n  \nI have been a season ticket holder since the inception of Charleston Jazz Orchestra for many wonderful reasons. This program is in anticipation of Person’s 90th birthday next month\, without any wistful nostalgia as he is still going strong performing regularly around the world.Houston Person was born on November 10\, 1934 in Florence\, South Carolina. He was musically inclined as a child\, and then studied at South Carolina State University. After college\, Person entered the service and was stationed in West Germany for several years in an Air Force unit that included Cedar Walton\, Lex Humphries\, and Eddie Harris\, among other jazz musicians who became lifelong friends and influences.Upon discharge from the service\, Person returned stateside for further studies in graduate school at the prestigious Hartt Institute in Connecticut. Person finally began making his way in the professional jazz world in the Boston/New England area. By the early 1960’s he had established his mark and began recording for Prestige Records. Person’s style also fit into the soulful jazz of the period and graces many live bands and recordings in that groove.By the 1970’s\, Houston met up with the awe-inspiring vocalist Etta Jones\, and after some occasional collaborations they started a steady working partnership that lasted until Etta’s death from cancer in 2001. Their musical and personal teamwork and connection was so intense that they were often mistaken as a married couple\, and feted as a continued legacy of the Lester Young and Billie Holiday collaboration.Person has a masterful and encyclopedic command of the American popular songbook. He conveys the meanings of these songs\, and also the blues\, and jazz standards\, in a straightforward manner that engages the audience with a direct emotional connection. This style marked his work with Etta\, and even more so his continued regular performances with his own combos\, or as a guest artist in demand with countless groups. \nBio sourced from columbia.edu[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”22233″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1749563392279{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]About Quentin Baxter \nQuentin E. He has earned multiple GRAMMY nominations\, the South Carolina Governor’s Award for the Arts\, and several other honors recognizing his artistic and educational contributions. Baxter tours internationally with RANKY TANKY and René Marie\, performing at top venues and festivals worldwide. Equally dedicated to education and community\, he served over two decades as an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston.
