Many deserving students\, when faced with the challenging format of the audition process\, underperform when they know they could do much better. Our audition experts will help prepare all students by providing strategies for audition success! \n  \nOur workshop is designed to prepare all students at every level\, whether Junior (grade 8 and below)\, Clinic (grade 9-10)\, or Senior (grade 11-12). Whether students are auditioning for the first time or have auditioned in the past and didn’t do well\, the Region/All-State Audition Workshop will improve their performance. In an interview with the Post and Courier\, Doctor says: \n“I grew up playing in church\, and that experience is easily the No. 1 influence on me as a musician. Playing in church taught me how to adapt on the spot\, how to play with a band\, and how to follow a leader\, among infinite other things. Growing up in the African-American church in Charleston\, though\, has shaped me in the Gullah/Geechee style of music and culture. Everything I play\, no matter the genre\, roots back to that for me because that’s a part of who I am.”  Source: Post and Courier \nA highly sought-after musician\, bandleader\, arranger\, and producer\, Doctor currently leads Charleston Jazz’s new electric jazz ensemble\, Momentum\, and is a favorite guest performer with the Charleston Jazz Orchestra. \nDemetrius attended the Charleston County School of Arts\, where he received numerous musical awards and recognitions for his work in piano and tuba. He went on to receive his B.A. in Music from the College of Charleston and later his M.A. in Music Technology from Coastal Carolina University. \nThe artist’s musical journey has given him the opportunity to work with gospel artists like Tye Tribbett\, Jonathan Nelson\, and Duranice Pace\, as well as jazz musicians like Fred Wesley and Freddy Cole. Demetrius has toured Italy\, Spain\, Croatia\, and the United States. \nDoctor currently serves as Minister of Music at Royal Baptist Church in North Charleston\, SC\, and sits on the board of Charleston Jazz. Doctor can be found playing in multiple venues and settings in and throughout the Charleston area. Additionally\, each student receives one additional 45-minute private or small-group (sectional) instructional session focused on her/his instrument. \nDesigned for students who can read music and want to advance their playing and improvisational skills. The standard jazz combo consists of piano\, bass\, guitar\, drums and one or two “horns” (sax\, trumpet\, trombone\, etc.) but there are no restrictions on what instruments may participate. The young “Dollar Brand\,” as he became known early on\, was exposed to American jazz\, township jive\, Cape Malay music\, and classical music. Out of this blend of the secular and the religious\, the traditional and the modern\, he developed his distinctive style and musical vocabulary. In 1963\, Duke Ellington heard his band play\, which led to a recording session in Paris: Duke Ellington presents the Dollar Brand Trio. Ibrahim’s music was inseparable from the anti-apartheid movement in his native country; his 1974 recording\, “Mannenberg –‘Is where it’s happening’” was an unofficial national anthem for Black South Africans. At 88\, he is a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master and among the great statesmen of culture. This beloved tradition opens with the National Anthem\, performed in 2023 by Nicole Heaston\, who appears in the title role of Vanessa. Following remarks from the Chair of the Board Alicia Gregory\, Spoleto General Director & CEO Mena Mark Hanna\, and Mayor John Tecklenburg\, the ceremony invites the City to join in as Spoleto fills Charleston’s venues for 17 days of world-class performing arts\, all showered in confetti. \n  \nThe ceremony concludes with special performances from the Charleston Jazz Academy Advanced Student Combo performing Abdullah Ibrahim‘s Jabula\, and Ingoma Nshya\, the Women Drummers of Rwanda\, featured in The Book of Life. \n  \nFree – Open To The Public[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
