First\, the Gullah Collective\, led by CL Baxter\, honors the Gullah Geechee musical traditions of the Sea Islands\, bringing ancestral rhythms and soulful storytelling to life. \nFollowing them\, the legendary drummer Herlin Riley leads his Quartet—with Oscar Rossignoli on piano\, Max Moran on bass\, and Julian Lee on tenor and soprano saxophone—paying tribute to the dynamic rhythms and improvisational spirit of New Orleans jazz. \nTogether\, these performances highlight the deep connections between two iconic American jazz cultures\, offering a rich\, immersive celebration of rhythm\, heritage\, and improvisation. \n\nThe Herlin Riley performance and education programs are presented as part of Jazz Is Community\, an initiative in partnership with Spoleto Festival USA. The education components include an in-school performance\, a masterclass at the Charleston Jazz Academy\, and the public Rhythm and Flow panel discussion and performance. \nThis initiative is generously supported by the Donaldson Charitable Trust and Hilton C. Drawing from the rich musical traditions of the Lowcountry\, Gullah Collective blends jazz\, roots\, R&B\, and gospel\, all while honoring the deep historical connections to West African rhythms and storytelling that define the Gullah Geechee people. \nCL Baxter envisioned the collective as a way to elevate the music and culture of the Gullah Geechee community\, which has often remained underrepresented on the global stage. While sounds like New Orleans Brass Band music and the rhythms of Go-Go have become widely recognized\, Baxter believes it is time for the world to experience the powerful and soulful sounds of the Lowcountry\, a place where West African traditions have melded with African American cultural expressions for centuries. \nThrough their music\, Gullah Collective celebrates the resilience\, creativity\, and rich heritage of the Gullah Geechee people. Their work serves as both a tribute to the past and a bold exploration of the future\, blending the cultural rhythms of the Sea Islands with modern sounds to create a music that resonates with audiences worldwide. \n  \nMusicians: \nCalvin Baxter II – Drums\nJavan Campbell – Hybrid Percussion\nDonald Graham – Gullah Drums\nDemetrius Doctor – Organ/Keyboard\nStephen Washington – Organ/Keyboard\nThomas Kenney – Guitar\nLaVonta Green – Bass\nGavin Smith – Trombone\nSteve Morley – Trumpet[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1764647717693{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\nHerlin Riley Quartet\nSince coming of age in the nurturing environment of a very musical family and a distinguished bloodline of drummers\, New Orleans native Herlin Riley emerged from that most creative era of all things rhythmic in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s\, to enliven the ensembles of such influential and demanding improvisers as pianist Ahmad Jamal and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis through his commanding yet elegant rhythmic presence. \nHis authoritative style of melodic percussion is deeply imbued in the fertile creative soil of the Crescent City\, encompassing as it does the entire length and breadth of America’s ongoing musical journey. \n  \nMusicians: \nHerlin Riley – Drums\nOscar Rossignoli – Piano\nMax Moran – Bass\nJulian Lee – Tenor & Soprano Saxophone[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”22452″ img_size=”full” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttV5522bW74″][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][/vc_section][vc_row][vc_column][vc_tta_accordion style=”flat” shape=”square” active_section=”1″][vc_tta_section title=”The Experience” tab_id=”1687923810144-42574a89-d6c9″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1764011963081{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]We’re excited to welcome you to the 2026 Charleston Jazz Festival\, now expanded to an incredible 9 days of jazz events. Both born in 1926\, Davis’ understated\, cool lyricism on Trumpet and Coltrane’s intense sheets of sound on Saxophone would form the modern jazz soundscape in the 1950’s and 60’s. Their musical relationship produced some of the most celebrated recordings in jazz history\, such as Kind of Blue\, ‘Round About Midnight\, and Milestones. \nThe 18-member Charleston Jazz Orchestra\, with its rich musical heritage of South Carolina\, celebrates 100 years of Miles and Coltrane\, continuing the journey set forth by these powerhouse architects of jazz! \nConcert Length: 90 min (no intermission) \nThis performance is made possible in part by MUSC \n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_tta_accordion style=”flat” shape=”square” active_section=”1″][vc_tta_section title=”The Experience” tab_id=”1687923810144-42574a89-d6c9″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1691007354390{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Often hailed as one of the top things to do in Charleston\, SC\, attending a Charleston Jazz Orchestra concert is an unforgettable experience.  If you are new to the jazz genre and big band style\, take a risk and surprise yourself.  Our director Robert Lewis will guide you through the nuances and significance of each piece\, sharing stories behind the songs and composers.  Many arrangements have been specially created by our own orchestra members and can’t be heard anywhere else in the world.  You can get a taste of past performances on our YouTube channel here. \nWhen you step through the doors of the Charleston Music Hall you are stepping back in time into a circa 1849 train station\, historically known as the Tower Depot.  You will hear the iconic sounds of jazz wafting through the lobby\, reminiscent of the city’s rich jazz history.  Stop by one of the lobby bars on the lower or upper lever to purchase snacks\, beer\, wine or soft drinks to bring with you into the theatre. Our friendly ushers will greet you and assist you in finding your way to your seats – there’s not a bad seat in the house! \nOur audience is diverse and you will see patrons of all ages and walks of life\, including couples\, singles\, students\, families\, and groups of friends – jazz has never met a stranger and all are welcome.  Many of our guests are tourists visiting Charleston\, and some of our regular attendees have been coming to concerts since the beginning of the organization.  We hope that you will become one of our “regulars” as well by joining the Charleston Jazz family by becoming a Season Subscriber\, Member\, Sponsor\, Donor\, Student or Advertiser.  There is a place for YOU at Charleston Jazz. \n  \nI have been a season ticket holder since the inception of Charleston Jazz Orchestra for many wonderful reasons. As a member of the College of Charleston Jazz Faculty\, Tyler Ross has between 15-20 guitar students – he teaches jazz combo\, guitar ensemble and jazz repertoire class.
