At a tender age\, he faced discouragement from his first teacher\, who dismissed him as devoid of talent. Undeterred\, Rodriguez’s love for the piano persisted\, even in the absence of an instrument at home. He resorted to painting piano keys on his parents’ dinner table to practice his scales—a testament to his determination and resourcefulness. \nEventually\, Alfredo was invited to represent Cuba at the Montreux Jazz Festival\, where he impressed Quincy Jones. Jones saw the immense talent in Rodriguez and extended an invitation to work together in the U.S. However\, pursuing this opportunity meant leaving his family behind and embarking on a journey that would require relinquishing his Cuban citizenship. \nSince then\, Rodriguez has achieved remarkable milestones. He has graced prestigious stages worldwide and earned a Grammy® nomination for his track “Guantanamera” from the album The Invasion Parade. Additionally\, he became the first non-Chinese artist to collaborate on the English version of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo theme song\, working alongside esteemed musicians such as Tan Dun\, Siedah Garrett\, and Quincy Jones. \nBeyond his accomplishments\, Rodriguez’s ability to “play stories” on the keys allows him to connect with his listeners on a deeply personal level. His albums\, including The Invasion Parade\, Tocororo\, and Duologue\, reflect his memories of Cuba\, his experiences as an immigrant\, and his journey of self-discovery through music. He’s been featured by All Things Considered\, Downbeat\, The New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, and Wall Street Journal among many others\, and performed for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert. \nRodriguez continues to share his music along with his impactful message of perseverance and cross culturalization on an international tour\, while sharing a variety of viral social media videos in which he plays well-known compositions in a Cuban timba style.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][/vc_section][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rC6rPhL2Kpo”][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][vc_tta_accordion style=”flat” shape=”square” active_section=”1″][vc_tta_section title=”The Experience” tab_id=”1687923810144-42574a89-d6c9″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1764011963081{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]We’re excited to welcome you to the 2026 Charleston Jazz Festival\, now expanded to an incredible 9 days of jazz events. This year’s festival brings together world-class artists and iconic Charleston venues for a true celebration of jazz in the cultural heart of our city. Join us for an unforgettable showcase of music\, creativity\, and the vibrant spirit of our arts community! \nOften hailed as one of the top things to do in Charleston\, SC\, attending a Charleston Jazz Orchestra concert is an unforgettable experience.  If you are new to the jazz genre and big band style\, take a risk and surprise yourself.  Our director Robert Lewis will guide you through the nuances and significance of each piece\, sharing stories behind the songs and composers.  Many arrangements have been specially created by our own orchestra members and can’t be heard anywhere else in the world.  You can get a taste of past performances on our YouTube channel here. \nWhen you step through the doors of the Charleston Music Hall you are stepping back in time into a circa 1849 train station\, historically known as the Tower Depot.  You will hear the iconic sounds of jazz wafting through the lobby\, reminiscent of the city’s rich jazz history.  Stop by one of the lobby bars on the lower or upper lever to purchase snacks\, beer\, wine or soft drinks to bring with you into the theatre. Our friendly ushers will greet you and assist you in finding your way to your seats – there’s not a bad seat in the house! \nOur audience is diverse and you will see patrons of all ages and walks of life\, including couples\, singles\, students\, families\, and groups of friends – jazz has never met a stranger and all are welcome.  Many of our guests are tourists visiting Charleston\, and some of our regular attendees have been coming to concerts since the beginning of the organization.  We hope that you will become one of our “regulars” as well by joining the Charleston Jazz family by becoming a Season Subscriber\, Member\, Sponsor\, Donor\, Student or Advertiser.  There is a place for YOU at Charleston Jazz. \n  \nI have been a season ticket holder since the inception of Charleston Jazz Orchestra for many wonderful reasons. Drawing from the rich musical traditions of the Lowcountry\, Gullah Collective blends jazz\, roots\, R&B\, and gospel\, all while honoring the deep historical connections to West African rhythms and storytelling that define the Gullah Geechee people. \nCL Baxter envisioned the collective as a way to elevate the music and culture of the Gullah Geechee community\, which has often remained underrepresented on the global stage. While sounds like New Orleans Brass Band music and the rhythms of Go-Go have become widely recognized\, Baxter believes it is time for the world to experience the powerful and soulful sounds of the Lowcountry\, a place where West African traditions have melded with African American cultural expressions for centuries. \nThrough their music\, Gullah Collective celebrates the resilience\, creativity\, and rich heritage of the Gullah Geechee people. Their work serves as both a tribute to the past and a bold exploration of the future\, blending the cultural rhythms of the Sea Islands with modern sounds to create a music that resonates with audiences worldwide. \n  \nMusicians: \nCalvin Baxter II – Drums\nJavan Campbell – Hybrid Percussion\nDonald Graham – Gullah Drums\nDemetrius Doctor – Organ/Keyboard\nStephen Washington – Organ/Keyboard\nThomas Kenney – Guitar\nLaVonta Green – Bass\nGavin Smith – Trombone\nSteve Morley – Trumpet[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1764647717693{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\nHerlin Riley Quartet\nSince coming of age in the nurturing environment of a very musical family and a distinguished bloodline of drummers\, New Orleans native Herlin Riley emerged from that most creative era of all things rhythmic in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s\, to enliven the ensembles of such influential and demanding improvisers as pianist Ahmad Jamal and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis through his commanding yet elegant rhythmic presence. \nHis authoritative style of melodic percussion is deeply imbued in the fertile creative soil of the Crescent City\, encompassing as it does the entire length and breadth of America’s ongoing musical journey. \n  \nMusicians: \nHerlin Riley – Drums\nOscar Rossignoli – Piano\nMax Moran – Bass\nJulian Lee – Tenor & Soprano Saxophone[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”22452″ img_size=”full” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttV5522bW74″][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][/vc_section][vc_row][vc_column][vc_tta_accordion style=”flat” shape=”square” active_section=”1″][vc_tta_section title=”The Experience” tab_id=”1687923810144-42574a89-d6c9″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1764011963081{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]We’re excited to welcome you to the 2026 Charleston Jazz Festival\, now expanded to an incredible 9 days of jazz events. SUMMARY:RHYTHM AND FLOW: America’s Story at 250\, Panel Discussion and Performance
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1771527997717{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\nTuesday\, April 21\, 2026 | 6:00 PM\nFox Music House\nFree and open to the public\, registration encouraged but not required \n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Register Now” style=”custom” custom_background=”#A53360″ custom_text=”#FFFFFF” align=”center” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2FDVt51THYyVMWABGM8″][vc_column_text margin_bottom=”0″ css=”.vc_custom_1772564390962{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Jazz is more than music—it is a mirror of the American experience. As the United States marks its 250th anniversary\, this panel discussion explores how jazz has reflected the nation’s values\, challenged its contradictions\, and helped define its ideals of freedom\, expression\, and collective voice. \nThe conversation examines how Charleston and the broader American South helped set the rhythms and cadence of jazz\, shaping its evolution from local tradition to global art form. From sacred and social roots to improvisation and innovation\, panelists will consider the enduring values jazz has contributed to American culture. \nMaster drummer Herlin Riley and Director of the Charleston Jazz Academy\, Demetrius Doctor\, will be joined by Dr. Karen Chandler—co-founder of the Charleston Jazz Initiative\, which documents South Carolina’s profound influence on jazz in America and around the world—and Dr. Al Fraser\, co-author of To Be\, or Not . . . to Bop: Memoirs\, the 1979 autobiography of legendary trumpeter John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie\, for this dynamic\, community-centered conversation. The panel will be moderated by Larry Blumenfeld\, Spoleto Festival USA’s Jazz Curator and a contributor to The Wall Street Journal\, and will conclude with a performance by the Herlin Riley Quartet. \nThe Herlin Riley performance and education programs are presented as part of Jazz Is Community\, an initiative in partnership with Spoleto Festival USA. The education components include an in-school performance\, a masterclass at the Charleston Jazz Academy\, and the public Rhythm and Flow panel discussion and performance. \n\nThis initiative is generously supported by the Donaldson Charitable Trust and Hilton C. Smith Jr.\, and in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the South Carolina Arts Commission. \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_empty_space height=”64px”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Their musical relationship produced some of the most celebrated recordings in jazz history\, such as Kind of Blue\, ‘Round About Midnight\, and Milestones. \nThe 18-member Charleston Jazz Orchestra\, with its rich musical heritage of South Carolina\, celebrates 100 years of Miles and Coltrane\, continuing the journey set forth by these powerhouse architects of jazz! \nConcert Length: 90 min (no intermission) \nThis performance is made possible in part by MUSC \n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_tta_accordion style=”flat” shape=”square” active_section=”1″][vc_tta_section title=”The Experience” tab_id=”1687923810144-42574a89-d6c9″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1691007354390{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Often hailed as one of the top things to do in Charleston\, SC\, attending a Charleston Jazz Orchestra concert is an unforgettable experience. In partnership with the Gibbes Museum\, this annual three-concert series features original jazz compositions inspired by artwork from the museum’s collection. This unique musical experience has quickly become a fan favorite and tends to sell out fast. \n  \nAbout the Performer: \nTyler Ross was born and bred in Neenah\, Wisconsin and credits his strong work ethic (“I’m happiest when I can get three solid hours of practice in a day”) and devotion to music to his upbringing. “Wisconsin folks work harder and play harder than any culture I’ve been a part of.” \nTyler took to guitar at age 12\, and “as soon as I picked up the guitar\, I was writing songs\,” jazz tunes\, and the like. “I work at writing every day.” Inspired by dozens\, including the Beatles\, The Allman Brothers (specifically Dickey Betts) and Neil Young\, Tyler first began performing guitar duos with his father; years later he worked taverns and clubs in Wisconsin “until 2am!” \nHis craft was honed at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point\, and Western Illinois University\, and beyond traditional guitar\, he also plays the lap steel guitar\, Rickenbacker bass guitar\, and rock-n-roll drums. As a member of the College of Charleston Jazz Faculty\, Tyler Ross has between 15-20 guitar students – he teaches jazz combo\, guitar ensemble and jazz repertoire class. Tyler is also a long time member of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra. \nMusicians:\nTyler Ross – Guitar\nGerald Gregory – Keyboards\nJake Holwegner – Bass\nDavid Patterson – Drums\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1745347569746{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\nPast Art of Jazz Performances\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/_4x6IAbSkOw?feature=shared”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/BNnUeQMTOZk?feature=shared”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/aRckqtzaCAU?feature=shared”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
