5/28/2020: From the Archives: Art of Jazz Series Edition – Marcus Amaker and Quentin Baxter

May 28, 2020 @ 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM EDT

We are delighted to share our From the Archives: Art of Jazz Series Edition with you! The Art of Jazz is an annual performance series presented in collaboration with the Gibbes Museum and Charleston Jazz. Under normal circumstances, we would all be enjoying this series together again this summer live and in person, but unfortunately, we had to postpone the series to next summer due to COVID-19. Each month, we will release a full Art of Jazz performance on Facebook and YouTube.

Marcus Amaker and Quentin Baxter
Originally performed live on June 20, 2018

Inspired by Patrick Dougherty’s sculpture exhibit Betwixt and Between, the duo premiered brand new works of poetry and music as part of the 2nd Annual Art of Jazz Series at the Gibbes Museum of Art.

Betwixt and Between, 2017
By Patrick Dougherty (American, b. 1945)
Red maple and sweet gum
Installation made possible by BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, Charleston Magazine, and the assistance of many generous volunteers

This site-specific installation was created during a three-week period in March 2017. Using locally-collected red maple and sweet gum saplings, artist Patrick Dougherty wove the sticks together to create a whimsical, sculptural environment. The spire-like forms are inspired by the many church steeples that punctuate the Charleston skyline.
