5/7/2020 – From the Archives: Blue Note Records – The Iconic Jazz Label and its Stars featuring T.S. Monk

May 7, 2020 @ 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM EDT

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we are releasing pre-recorded videos of Charleston Jazz Orchestra performances every week on our YouTube channel and Facebook page, free of charge, to provide comfort and connection during these uncertain times.

If you are in a position to support the continuation of this virtual concert series, please make a donation HERE. Half the funds raised directly support our musicians, many of whom have lost their income due to the cancellation of all concerts and gigs. Without our talented musicians, there is no Charleston Jazz Orchestra.

Thank you in advance for your support!

FROM THE ARCHIVES

BLUE NOTE RECORDS: The Iconic Label and its Stars featuring T.S. Monk
Originally performed live on September 16, 2017

Blue Note Records has produced some of most iconic jazz recordings ever. From John Coltrane to Cannonball Adderley, the label has been home to nearly every major jazz artist of each era. Names like Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, Art Blakey, Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver, Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins and Eric Dolphy have all graced the albums of Blue Note Records. Additionally, the album cover art was as influential in the world of graphic design as the music was in the world of jazz.

Our special guest is jazz drumming legend T.S. Monk, son of jazz pioneer Thelonious Monk. T.S. received the New York Jazz Awards First Annual ‘Recording of the Year’ and Downbeat Magazine’s prestigious ‘Reader’s Poll Award’ for his musical tribute to his father, entitled Monk on Monk. T.S. also founded the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, which has created a number of influential programs that support music education across the country.

T.S. Monk and the CJO will perform favorites from Blue Note’s legendary catalog and relive the jazz milestones that influenced so many. T.S. will also share many of his experiences growing up around the fabulous jazz musicians of Blue Note Records.
