Jazz Education in Schools

We believe that every child deserves access to the transformative power of music. Our school education programs bring the joy and history of jazz directly into classrooms, introducing students to an art form that has shaped American culture and continues to inspire creativity worldwide.

Through live performances, interactive workshops, and instructional classes, students experience jazz not just as music, but as a story of resilience, diversity, and innovation. These programs open doors to self-expression, build confidence, and foster a deeper understanding of cultural traditions.

By engaging with professional musicians, young people discover the discipline, collaboration, and creativity that jazz demands—skills that extend far beyond music. Our goal is to spark curiosity, nurture imagination, and ensure that the next generation carries forward the legacy of this uniquely American art form.

Whether it’s a performance, workshop, or artist visit to a school, these events help students develop an interest in and appreciation for jazz music and Charleston’s unique role in jazz history.

Jazz Band at Schools

Jazz Combo at School

Charleston Jazz provides Jazz Combo instruction at select schools across the Tri-County area, creating opportunities for students who may not otherwise have access to jazz education. These programs immerse young musicians in the rich tradition of jazz, focusing on improvisation, ensemble performance, and foundational music theory. Melodica Project Charleston Jazz Academy

Melodica Project

Now in our fourth year, we are partnering with Angel Oak Elementary School on Johns Island, teaching their 4th and 5th-grade students to play the melodica instrument. The Melodica Project introduces students to the jazz style of music through melodicas, hand-held instruments that utilize the same layout as a piano but require individuals to use a wind tube to create sound.
